ABBA: Against the Odds plot

The Eurovision Song Contest was won fifty years ago by a Swedish band that the world would hear a lot from: ABBA. The film is not exclusively a success story, but a documentary about a group that grows into a phenomenon against the spirit of the times and the taste of the music press. A band that tries to break through in the United States at the expense of personal suffering. The film mainly covers the period between the albums Waterloo (1974) and Super Trouper (1980). Never-before-seen images, photos and interviews are included in the documentary.

50 years after ABBA presented itself to an audience of millions during the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Waterloo', Anni-Frid, Benny, Björn and Agnetha look back on their career. This documentary distinguishes itself by focusing on the struggle for recognition and the dark sides of the success the band worked for for years. ABBA was reviled for years in their own country, abroad they were reviled for their extravagant clothing and their success at the Eurovision Song Contest meant that radio stations did not take their music seriously. Rogan exclusively uses archive material that is put into perspective by ABBA and crew members. Of course the biggest hits are presented, but they are mainly presented as artistic expression and not as superficial pop. A nice addition for fans, an excellent introduction for the less initiated.

Wonderful documentary about ABBA that is really about the group and yet manages to go deeper than just the music. But no cliché overview of the band members individually and their private lives or the career behind them, with witnesses in a seat who talk about what they know or have seen. The rise of ABBA, the evolution of their music, the difficult passage in America and the very difficult balance between their career and their personal life. With lots of beautiful images, plenty of music and the band members themselves speaking. And a beautifully fitting ending. There are several documentaries and music films by the group, but this one summarizes everything very nicely.

Great documentary about the rise and fall of the ABBA phenomenon. No talking heads; the four provide the commentary themselves on the often fascinating archive footage. And of course the documentary contains a lot of great music, with a seemingly inexhaustible stream of catchy pop classics.
