The master thief Gerald Graham Dennis, who has escaped from a Canadian prison, is on his way to Buffalo in the United States with Peggy Arthur, who gave him money to buy a forged passport. Dennis, Peggy and a criminal bartender from Buffalo plan a robbery in which Dennis is captured. Dennis can escape, but he must determine that his henchmen have left him. Later he manages to track down Peggy and the bartender, but he is beaten up by them. In a hospital, Dennis meets the nurse Martha Rollins, who falls in love with him. Both go to New Rochelle, where Dennis is injured in a robbery. Martha tends Dennis' wounds and she hopes that he will now stay on the right path. But when Martha catches Dennis in New York with a young woman one day, she reports him to the police. However, Dennis manages to get away just in time and flees to Los Angeles, where he meets the rich and divorced Arthur Vinson.
