The Crooked Road plot

Blind to the finer things in life, Dave Fenton rules as the leader of a criminal gang. His companion, Blanche, a shop girl, is annoyed by Dave's inability to make a big hit. She urges him to stay on the wrong track, causing Dave's life to fall further and further into disrepair. Nellie, confined to a wheelchair, sells newspapers to contribute to the fund she and her mother are saving for the day they can go to the countryside. Dave does her a small service that leads to an intimate friendship. One night, Slinky Joe, one of Dave's gangsters, overhears Nellie and her mother counting their money. He reports to the gang and they plan a raid.
