Sergeant Madden plot
"The Father A Cop . . . The Son A Killer"
Sergeant Shaun Madden upholds the proud traditions of the New York Police Department. His son Dennis and his adopted son Albert 'Al' Boylan, Jr. will one day also join the police force. As a boy, Dennis was a rebellious troublemaker and this turns out to be a trait that haunts him at the police academy. After training, ambitious Dennis believes the fastest path to promotion is brute force, which leads him to reach for his weapon when a young man steals fur. However, this shooting confronts Dennis with the enmity of the mobster 'Piggy' Ceders, because the thief was his girlfriend's brother. In revenge, Piggy falsely accuses Dennis of bribery, which sends him to jail.
