"Do we stake our lives?"
Three brothers live in a slum on the edge of a bombed-out city. Bulldozers are busy preparing the rubble on the waste site for construction. The eldest brother is a loyal member of the city's yakuza. The middle one is a loner who has his own criminal business to get money. The somewhat simple youngest brother is a pig farmer and just keeps his pigs between the slums. When the middle one convinces the youngest to help him in criminal cases at the expense of the yakuza gang, a battle to the death begins between the brothers.

This crime film seems inspired by the French Nouvelle Vague and film noir, with its innovative camera angles, though this wasn't actually intentional. A lesser-known novel by Simenon, Les Frères Rico, forms the basis of the script. But it's a Japanese "new wave," meaning it's dirtier and more violent, especially when one of the brothers in the story and his companion resort to torture to find out where the other brother has hidden the loot. Underlying this is a story about escaping poverty and slums. One of the brothers has succeeded and is a top yakuza figure. For the other two, however, there seems to be no hope. The ending is surprising and can be seen as a moral twist. A fine film this time from Fukasaku.
