Ningen no Shômei plot

Jonny Hayward, a black American, travels to Japan, but is murdered there. Detective Munusue is one of the detectives investigating the murder. Munusue begins to suspect that rising fashion designer Kyoko Yasugi has information about the murder or is actually involved.

The film opens with a wonderful seventies vibe from New York. Johnny Hayward's enthusiasm is short-lived, however. He manages to reach the elevator of the hotel in Tokyo and to name the important clue of the straw hat before he breathes his last. The Japanese police investigation then gets off to such a good start that the murder case seems to be solved in almost no time. Only then does the film last another 2 hours A side track in America must first be worked out before returning to Japan where the denouement will take place. The song and the straw hat floating through the ravine is a beautiful poetic choice but unfortunately not satisfying enough.
