After a violent quarrel with his wife Jan, the writer Stephen leaves her to get drunk. He meets the entertainer Grena in a nightclub. As the evening progresses, the drunken Stephen becomes involved in an argument in his own home. After the argument, Stephen finds Grena's apparently lifeless body on the floor. Stephen's landlord Matthew realizes that something isn't right and decides to blackmail Stephan.
