1857. The Smiths have just moved in with their two daughters, the eldest, Madeleine, being courted by a French suitor, Emile L'Anglier. However, he only plans to marry her if her family fortune goes along with it. When Emile suddenly appears murdered, suspicion falls on Madeleine.
