Vilde lives on the wild North Sea coast of Norway in 1895 and is sexually abused by her incestuous stepfather in front of her deaf-mute daughter Malene. Is the girl the product of the stepfather or of her liaison with an English sculptor? Before Vilde can be married off, she is raped by her betrothed, a local dignitary.
