Wealthy businessman "Colonel" Bentry hires attractive private investigator Belinda Prentice to investigate his stepson and heir Bill Forestman. Bill recently withdrew large sums of money from his account, Bentry said, rented an expensive apartment in the city and refused to explain his actions. En route to Bentry's estate, two suspicious-looking characters catch the attention of Belinda and her assistant Iggy Broty, when they first stop near Bill's apartment. Iggs stays behind to follow these individuals, while Belinda travels on to Colonel Bentry. When Bentry's butler Severance wants to announce Belinda to his employer, they hear a cry from the library. Both find Bentry's dead body. Belinda finds a hypodermic needle near Bentry and warns her father, Police Inspector Prentice, who would rather see his daughter quit her job and marry a young man. Iggy, Belinda and her father face several suspects, including Bill Forestman, his mysterious sister Judith, his bodyguard "Chicago" and Jonathan Lowell, the Bentry family's regularly drunk lawyer.
