Vittorio Coppa is an Italian conductor who has been traveling back and forth on the night train between Munich and Rome for years. His wife Téresa lives in Rome, but in the meantime he is also married to Ingrid in Germany. Vittorio is a bigamist, but the two women do not know of each other's existence, so it has always gone well so far. But then suddenly there is a hitch and Vittorio is in trouble.
