Letitia "Tish" Carberry is an eccentric spinster who lives with her cousin Charlie Sands. Her two old friends Aggie Pilkington and Lizzie Wilkins live nearby in a boarding house. Cora Edwards also lives in the guest house and she is in love with Charlie. However, Charlie is in love with Katherine ''Kit'' Bowser, the daughter of Judge Horace Bowser. Tish and her friends try to foster a romance between Cora and Charlie, but then Cora falls in love with Theodore ''Ted'' Bowser and they secretly marry before he has to leave for Canada for training. Charlie and Kit also secretly run off. Cora wants to go after Ted. She "borrows" money from a church fund and also leaves.
