Gilby Smalls collapses after being fired, his apartment burned down and his relationship with his girlfriend broke down. The now thirty-year-old is forced to move in with May, his mother who is obsessed with men. Gilby's life looks bleak until he comes into contact with Rachel, the very beautiful but married sister, through his best friend Kevin. Rachel is all Gilby needs to get his life back on track. Desperate to impress, Gilby becomes entangled in a web of lies before facing the inconvenient truth about himself.
