Screwball comedies aren't really for me I'm afraid. Bringing Up Baby (1938) I still liked looking away, despite the fact that it is extremely busy, which is characteristic of screwball comedies. This one is much less busy (with the exception of the dialogues) but the course did not appeal to me (it became very long-winded) so that I could hardly keep my attention. That it mainly takes place in one location is understandable (film adaptation of a play) but it does not help either. I found the humor for a comedy quite scarce, at least by contemporary standards, and it didn't appeal to me. Today we know no better than that many respectable people turn out to be not nearly as respectable, but at the time people thought such a thing was funny. The biggest problem is that it feels very dated in several respects, even the way the woman is portrayed in a (failed) relationship with a man is not of this time. A classic that, in my opinion, does not live up to its reputation. 2*

Brilliant dialogues, nice characters, interesting situations, perfect subtle direction by one of my favorite directors (responsible for the version of David Copperfield with WC Fields, Holiday with Grant and Hepburn , the American remake of Gaslight with an Oscar for Ingrid Bergman, Adam's rib, the version of A star is born with Judy Garland and James Mason , and of course My fair lady), and three of the best actors and actresses Hollywood has ever had, complemented by an ideal collection of supporting actors (Roland Young as Uncle Willie with a huge hangover: "Ohhh... . this is one of those days that the pages of history teach us are best spent lying in bed."). As the Hollywood Reporter wrote at the time, "There are just not enough superlatives sufficiently to appreciate this show." Seen it 11 times now, and I still can't get enough. As far as I'm concerned, the best comedy Hollywood has ever made, with a bit more depth than a typical screwball comedy (which I wouldn't call this one, although according to some people it definitely belongs to that genre. belongs).

The Philadelphia Story Is highly praised and after seeing the cast you will want to see this film. Fan of both Cary Grant and James Stewart in Hitchcock's films which made me curious to see how they would do together in this one.

This film really has to have it from the cast. I really liked Grant, Hepburn and Stewart all three. I just don't think the movie would be memorable if they weren't in it. I didn't find the whole blackmail plan very interesting. The movie only gets really fun halfway through when the night before the wedding arrives. There is a nice chemistry between Stewart and Hepburn's character when they both get drunk, which was very comical.

A nice film with some extra shine by the star cast.
