"HE OFFERED THE LADIES HIS HEART and A FORTUNE IN PAWN TICKETS"
The English aristocrat Major Horatio Chatteris is deeply in debt. He is considered a riotous spendthrift by his sister Harriet and his son John. Horatio decides to leave his home and return as a re-educated man so that they can be proud of him. Horatio is blamed for narrowing John's chances because of his father's bad reputation. John would like to be appointed by the Bishop to take a seat in the thriving parish of Upper Haddington. John needs this position to pay off the loans he took out to pay off his father's debts.
