"Why live when you can rule."
Joe Toy is about to grow up. However, he becomes increasingly frustrated with his father, Frank,'s attempts to control his life. To be free once and for all, he escapes with his friend Patrick and a strange boy named Biaggio to a clearing in the woods. They want to build a house here, away from responsibility and parents. Once their makeshift home is ready, they feel like royalty in the woods.

Cool movie.
Robinson performs excellently and especially Moises Arias steals the show as the strange, but nice Biaggio.
Only strange that the tag "drama" is missing here.

Film about a couple of teenagers who run away from home. The film actually didn't start very promising. Initially it looked quite predictable, but fortunately the film built up nicely and there were certainly beautiful scenes about friendship. And with that, the film still ended on the right side of the line even though everything else went as you would expect.

A pleasant film that combines very artful adventure and coming of age. The story about three boys who run away from home and live in a hut they built themselves, because their family situation is suffocating, is recognizable and palpable. The home situations are an excellent reflection of the alienating way in which parents and adolescents interact with each other, as well as the urge for freedom that arises from this.
The viewer is first given a glimpse into the family atmosphere. A little strong here and there to cultivate sympathy for the boys. That works. Fundamental understanding emerges for the decision to run away. The fact that the story is mainly told from the perspective of the runaways also helps for understanding and empathy.
The film focuses in particular on the friendship between the boys. On the mutual interactions. On the adventure. On the coming of age. The story is told calmly and is supported by pleasant indie music and good acting. The atmosphere is a bit rowdy and frivolous and makes you happy. That light-hearted path that makes for pretty carefree entertainment is sadly abandoned at the end of the film and replaced by a serious tone that feels quite forced. An unnatural break with the adventurous gaiety that precedes it.
And so, across the board, The Kings of Summer is a fun, light-hearted film that deals with friendship and the urge to be independent. However, it is also a film that weakens at the end as melancholy makes the tone more serious and melodramatic and the (somewhat moralizing) message of the essential importance of the (stable) family is proclaimed. Good movie. Bland ending.
