Duncan is a philosophical hitchhiker passing through America. He ends up in the car of Toad, a suburban artist on his way to Ann Arbor, Michigan. There, Toad wants to build a new life near his sister Jenny, a folk singer with a verbally aggressive fiancé. Partly because of her fiancé's behavior, Jenny visits a therapist. She also often drinks cappuccinos with her friend Squeeze: a spontaneous and fashionable young woman. Hank, her boyfriend, is a painter who instead of painting mainly bakes cookies and prepares for a possible guest role on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Then there's Julian, a nihilistic DJ with a popular radio show. When Duncan honors Ann Arbor with a visit, he encounters all these colorful characters. With his simple vision of life and curious attitude, he knows how to change their lives forever.
