Charlie is a jack-of-all-trades at the Evergeen Hotel, which is also a farm, in the idyllic town of Sunnyside. He has an awful lot of work and gets more beatings than food. The only thing that makes his life worth living is his daily visit to Edna (Purviance), when her father is out of the house.
