Indian horror comedy about the son of a tailor who falls for a mysterious beauty, but begins to doubt whether she is man-eater Stree. This paranormal entity comes to every festival to take men to the other side, while having the courtesy to stay away when a spell has been painted on the front door. It's funny how 'Stree' (2018) plays with slasher clichés such as the well-known voyeuristic, objectifying POV shots of a female monster that preys on male victims. It's strange that the main character is a virgin man who, as a kind of 'final girl', doubts whether he should give in to his own sexuality. Although some of it seems to me to be more culturally inspired than a self-reflexive cleverness in line with 'It Follows' (2014) or 'The Cabin in the Woods' (2011). In that regard, even the tagline 'based on a ridiculously true phenomenon' makes it clear that a lesson needs to be learned. It makes 'Stree' (2018) a predictable film where reasonably effective horror scenes are too often watered down with comic relief or preachy moralism.

Very nonsensical to stretch these kinds of concepts to a running time of 128 minutes, but in Bollywood apparently everything has to last several hours. It doesn't exactly benefit the end result, because the comedy never hits the right note and the horror scenes are sparsely designed. Only the music numbers in between (which actually don't fit anywhere in the film) are a bit better arranged. The cast members participate enthusiastically in the event, but director Amar Kaushik's format does not go anywhere. The more sensational scenes really don't look good and the finale lacks spice in every respect, but fans of this type of cinema will certainly find something more to enjoy. I had hoped for an eccentric and smooth horror film, but the film hardly delivers on that.
