I still had faith in the comedic qualities of John C. Reilly, but that all remains at Will Ferrel level here. 80% of the gags miss the mark or are already too weak.

Okay, the other 20% still had a smile now and then, but the level of 21st century comedies remains of a very meager level.

Clumsy and uninspired. A very simple kind of humor (?). Americans may love it but it's too caricatured with stupid dialogue, a lot of noise for nothing and very often painfully ridiculous

Fortunately, Mary Steenburgen has a sweet smile and looks very neat for a mother of a 40-year-old son.

Second McKay.

Those who don't know this name will probably be able to gain some knowledge from the latest film he has made. That was quite a big discussion on the internet, but I decided to give it another go by just seeing what the best man had made for it. That's how I ended up at Step Brothers.

This movie isn't even remotely like McKay's latest movie, as it's a very run-of-the-mill comedy film. That means a whole fanfare of bombastic figures, a lot of shouting, sometimes questionable humor and a predictable narrative. Brightened up in between with some genuinely funny scenes that remarkably enough push the boundaries, but that doesn't change the core too much.

Ferrell and Reilly remain very semi-actors to me. Sometimes they play very good roles, sometimes they let themselves go in screaming. This film is a clear example of the second, only that childish stuff has been beautiful again after 30 minutes. Seeing how two losers make life hell for their caretakers quickly loses its effect and some idiot side characters can do little to change that.

The advantage is that it all looks away smoothly and has some special humor that I could still laugh about, but otherwise I mainly frowned. Apparently there is an audience for this film, because there are enough positive sounds to be seen. Sometimes funny, generally smooth, but otherwise too loud and intrusive to have a lasting effect.
