Lizette, Carol and Cheryl-Ann work as waitresses at Joe's donut shop in the small Ontario town of Stayner. The naive and always smiling Cheryl-Ann - despite a sick mother - considers the irresponsible Lizette her best friend. In turn, Lizette finds Cheryl-Ann annoying. And so she reluctantly asks Cheryl-Ann to be the fourth person on a double date because Carol is ill. Terry - Lizette's husband - and Simon are the other two on this night out to a concert. Simon's relationship with his fiancée Pam has just ended and both men want to go to a hockey game. The evening does not go according to plan and everyone, as well as other residents of the town, questions their current relationships.
