Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You plot

James Sveck (Toby Regbo) is a vulnerable teenager of divorced parents living in Manhattan. His mother Marjorie has just returned early from her honeymoon with compulsive gambler Mr. Rogers (Stephen Lang). His father Paul, a successful lawyer, expresses his insecurity by dating women half his age. His sister Gillian actually dates men twice her age in an attempt to stand out. Surrounded by a family he has no connection with, James can only rely on his grandmother Nanette and his athletic and quirky coach Rowena. Meanwhile, he develops a tempestuous friendship with John, the director of his mother's art gallery. With only a few months to go before he starts college, this summer will change his life forever.
