Exaggerated problems of a sixteen-year-old girl, that's what it's all about in Sixteen Candles. Molly Ringwald was already drowsy in The Breakfast Club and I didn't like it here too much, especially whiny. So I couldn't care less about her High School stuff. The course of the film is actually directly predictable. Also striking that this comedy has a misplaced Asian character. That stereotype is really no longer possible.

"What's happenin', hot stuff?"

Nice comedy from John Hughes, mainly because it's so nice 80s, but a lot less than Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The acting was okay, although some actors were a bit bland. The problems of a teenage girl don't appeal to me and this film shows how incredibly useless that worrying is. The film is also not very realistic (after all, it is a comedy), which parent forgets the birthday of his own child? On the other hand, I thought there were some very entertaining antics in it. That Asian may have been a bit stereotypical, but I thought he was a genius.

The highlight for me was the typical 80's music. Not only does the film have a beautiful soundtrack by Ira Newborn, but also songs by Madness, The Stray Cats, David Bowie, Billy Idol, Wham!, The Vapors, Kajagoogoo, Paul Young, AC/DC and, as Hughes often does, some film music , here from The Godfather, Peter Gun and Twilight Zone: The Movie. The music makes for some really funny moments.

It's not quite my cup-of-tea, but I can always appreciate 80s movies. Besides, isn't 16 a bit old for a sophomore? I'm 15 and going to the 4th.

A sufficient one.

“That's why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they'd call 'em something else.”

A real John Hughes movie. A wonderful 80s atmosphere, the struggles of teenagers, some humor, drama and of course Molly Ringwald. Samantha (Ringwald) has turned 16 and everyone in her family forgets her birthday.

She is in love with Jake, who also has a crush on her. But of course they dance around each other throughout the film. Besides Ringwald, Michael Hall is also excellent. I lacked some depth and some characters were very stereotypical, but Sixteen Candles undeniably has its charm.

Moderate 80s junk. In terms of acting and visually very dated, which makes it difficult for me to get into it. You've seen a film like this a dozen times, each time with slightly different nuances. On the other hand, it's funny how much high school life in the 80s resembles that of today (at least on film). Wouldn't that have been different between the 80s and 50s? But the film never really captivated me, the characters and events didn't interest me enough for that. The actors themselves are quite okay. Sympathetic even. Even that kid from the school won't get the blood from under your fingernails. 1.5*.

Everyone has forgotten Sam(antha)'s sixteenth birthday and that makes her miserable. In addition, she has a crush on the beautiful boy in the class, who already has a girlfriend. As usual, Hughes brings a humorous yet tender look at the growing pains of young adults. Sometimes it got pretty bland and sexually spiced innuendo is fired but it certainly doesn't get gross. Ferris Bueller's Day Off definitely remains Hughes' better but Molly Ringwald remains an incredible 80s teen icon for her lolita types.

Nice for status.

Few votes on MM, but Sixteen Candles clearly gets a lot of references from other movies. When I saw that it was about to go off Netflix I thought it wouldn't hurt too much to put on this classic of only 93 minutes. It is a film that recognizably falls into the style of Hughes.

Now I haven't seen too much of Hughes, especially his high school side really. In that regard, this film is very similar to Hughes' other high school films. Unfortunately, that's not really a compliment. Hughes' high school movies are familiar, but also clumsy and often uncomfortable. Also these.

The humor is bland and dry, and is clearly intended that way. Still, it's all just on the awkward level, and again that's no compliment. The humor often seems to have been intended differently, but it comes across as clumsy and made. It feels like improvisation was not allowed in any way when this movie is clearly supposed to have more of the fun.

Visually not so special. The high-school feeling prevails, but for the rest it is rather empty and easy to fill. It is sufficient, but also within the lines and safe. Acting isn't too good. A few well-known actors can be spotted in young roles, but only Hall stood out to me despite his very lackluster role.

Although the film is short, I can't say it was easy to finish all 93 minutes without looking at the clock. The main problem is that it doesn't want to get up to speed and feels clumsy. The jokes don't catch on and the behavior of the kids and teens is too scripted. It is lighthearted and has a memorable feeling, but that's where it ends. I appreciate it a little extra for the stature and effort of the young cast.
