Too bad, I expected more from this Chow since I rate Shaolin soccer and Kung fu hustle so highly. I found this one less and sometimes not as funny as his other films. All in all, a nice movie to watch. Kleine 3.5* For some funny moments and dry humor. Of which I would have liked to see more in Sik san

I'm curious about Chow's new film..

Nice review.

I didn't really know what to expect, but this is a film where it actually helps to have a few more Hong Kong films behind you. Especially those who are familiar with the whole God of Gamblers thing that was super popular there during the early 90s. Because ultimately this is not so much a parody of Eastern food porn, but of the weird gambler niche (a role that Chow himself previously took on, by the way).

It is also striking that Chow really was a natural talent. In terms of body language and facial expressions, he single-handedly ensures that the film is also funny and digestible for people who have no affinity with Hong Kong films at all. Not unimportant, because although comedy is very popular there, there are few films that have done well internationally.

It also looks decent for a film from '96. Nice to see Karen Mok next to Chow, but in the end it is mainly Chow's antics and some cheesy, exaggerated humor that form the main part of the film. Great entertainment, few unnecessary moments and pure comedy from start to finish. Lee, Chow and Ng, always fun, but this is one of their best films.

4.0* and a extensive review
