A bit of a mix of comedy and drama that fails to pull either off well. Fundamentally an okay film with a likeable main character and equally likeable parents, but she never truly comes to life. The atmosphere is actually quite fine and the film is reasonably watchable, but it fails to captivate enough. 2.5*.

About two teenage girls who share a room at college. About the socially isolated Devon (Sadie Sandler) and her opposite, Celeste (Chloe East), who are at the beginning of their academic lives, initially get along well, but become increasingly estranged from each other as the school year progresses. The film shows how the two come into conflict and how the conflicts escalate. The perspective lies with Chloe, who serves as a figure of identification for the viewer.

The film is not a psychological drama but a comedy. This means that the film exhibits little depth when it comes to the characterization. Director Chandler Levack opts for lighthearted entertainment with the occasional line of meaning. She combines exaggerated and somewhat crude humor with the characters' urge to discover the world. Although Chloe is presented as the protagonist and Celeste is increasingly cast in the role of antagonist, Levack does not shy away from showing the bad character traits of both. A good choice, as the actions stemming from jealousy, revenge, or anger yield the funniest scenes.

Although some serious themes touch upon the screen here and there, they are touched upon with a feather-light touch. Issues such as social isolation and class distinction are touched upon, but receive no profound attention. They appear primarily to serve the convenience of the viewer, who can thus easily interpret the characters of Devon and Celeste. Characters that are pleasantly freshly portrayed by Sadie Sandler and Chloe East.

As mentioned, Roommates primarily delivers lighthearted entertainment. And although the tone could have been a bit edgier here and there, the film generally performs adequately.

Among the infantile, vulgar comedies churned out left and right by right by Adam Sandler's production company 'Happy Madison', there is every now and then a modest gem. This comedy, about a socially insecure student [Sadie Sandler] who shares a room with an extroverted opposite [Chloe East], scores thanks to Sandler's authentic performance, the serious attention to student dilemmas, and more than enough spot-on jokes. Sarah Sherman is a matter of taste as the counselor who tells the story as a life lesson to bickering roommates Luna [Storm Reid] and Auguste [Ivy Wolk].
