Jack Willes is a handsome road-train driver with a secret. He has written a successful novel, but to be seen as a real man in Australian 'Outback', he needs another author's name, preferably a woman. He chooses the one from his best friend, Ruby Vale. He has to struggle to keep up appearances when the fashionable publisher Ziggy Keane arrives in the dusty town of Lucktown to play a contract with 'Ruby Vale'. He convinces the real Ruby Vale to play his game. Her fiancé isn't thrilled when Ruby goes on a promotional tour with Jack, and her best friend is stunned at Ruby's hidden talent.
