Opa Cor plot

Cor has become a grandfather in the meantime. He has a grandson, Coentje, and although Cor has good intentions, things quickly go wrong. When he has to babysit his grandson, he lets himself be tempted to participate in a klaverjas tournament, which – as we are used to from him – involves drinking a few too many beers. His daughter Carola is furious and forbids her father to have any more contact with his grandson. Grandpa Cor does everything he can to see his grandson again, but his plan to play a trick on his daughter gets completely out of hand. This gets him into bigger trouble than ever. Will he ever be reunited with his Coentje?

We went to Grandpa Cor enthusiastically.

We had seen Uncle Cor and expected something of a similar nature.

But alas, what a very mediocre film is Grandpa Cor, should it be humor? It is a confusing and very mediocre film.

It's not often that all 4 of us thought: "How much longer?"

The best part was the 5 seconds of footage of Feyenoord.

This film is really not recommended...

Uncle Cor remains a delightful character. Martin van Waardenberg portrays him as the ultimate Rotterdammer, shrugging his shoulders matter-of-factly when he gets into trouble again over a failed financial venture. Although I have to say, "Grandpa Cor" (2024) really goes overboard this time with insurance fraud and a flight to Suriname. Daughter Carola, in particular, is unreasonably punished by Cor's antics, to the point where it's actually no longer funny. In a possible sequel, they would, as The Oceanic Six also says, choose between lighthearted feel-good or absurdist. As it is, the jokes miss their mark a bit too often.

Where Uncle Cor could still evoke a laugh, Grandpa Cor just smiles. That's a shame, there could have been more. A lineup of well-known Dutch people passes by, each one better than the last. Elise Schaap is very strong in her act. It's a familiar recipe, though, which doesn't mean you can't sit back and watch this. Even if it were only for the Theo Maasen or Freek de Jonge moment... 2.5*
