Ernie Williams (Danny Kaye) is an American soldier who is assigned to play a doppelgänger for a British colonel during World War II. That gives the Colonel the opportunity to travel in secret. But Williams's job ends when the Colonel dies: he must stick to his role in order to confuse the Nazis about D-Day.
