On A String is an ever-witty film about a young violist who doesn't know what to do with her life, tries to earn a living with her music without much success and without feeling any passion for her craft ('Why do you musicians wear black clothes?' 'Because we are dead inside') or takes odd jobs at weddings where no one even listens to the music, is certain about nothing or is certain but afraid, and just muddles along in terms of relationships. While she stumbles through her empty little life without much satisfaction, she eventually learns to be content through the love of her parents and a job as a violin teacher. In short, it is a sort of Woody Allen for the Gen Z generation. Because the film remains consistently entertaining, it is a successful and particularly charming debut film.

A film that sometimes strikes the right tone and could have been really good – such an atmospheric portrait without a real plot, going from A to B, is right up my alley. And at times, the film is exactly that, with a young violinist, her life showing no real progress, and especially the many odd jobs she takes just to make ends meet. It’s just a shame that the tone shifts quite a bit often and leans too frequently towards annoying slapstick, and every time I was pulled right out of the film. It leans too much towards cringe. Whether it’s that very first scene or the entire role of that brother. A pity; this thing keeps shooting itself in the foot. 3.0*.

Viola player Isabel [Isabel Hagen] plays in a string quartet with her best friend Christina [Ling Ling Huang], but still lives with her parents and tries to find her own way. At a party, she meets Carl [Frederick Weller], a married man who hires her to teach his daughter Rachel [Haven Stashenko]. Portrait of a young woman searching for direction in her life is clearly inspired by Frances Ha and has some nice moments on paper. The vast majority of the cast tries too hard to be funny, causing it to lose a lot of authenticity. Hagen gives little emotional depth to her character, whereas Huang and Dylan Baker (as Isabel's father) really hit the nail on the head.
