In 1959, the film 'Les Quatre Cents Coups' by François Truffaut is presented at the Cannes Film Festival, with great success. Jean-Luc Godard is another French filmmaker who wants to make his first feature film in the same period. He manages to convince the producers to finance his project. The shooting of 'A Bout de Souffle' with Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo among others, starts.

One of the better films about the making of a film (in this case Jean-Luc Godard’s groundbreaking À Bout De Souffle) with an excellent cast and a director who has managed to get his cast to “act” in the same relaxed manner as the leads in À Bout De Souffle. For those who don’t know: film critic Jean-Luc Godard [Guillaume Marbeck], following in the footsteps of his colleague François Truffaut [Adrien Rouyard], who enjoyed great success with his debut film Les Quatre Cents Coups, wants to shake up the film world himself. He deliberately avoids as many Hollywood conventions as possible, for example by working on location without hired extras, not using a developed script and filming scenes only once. Lead actors Jean-Paul Belmondo [Aubry Dullin] and Jean Seberg [Zoey Deutch] make the most of it, even though they (also) don't understand what Godard is doing. An amusing tribute to idiosyncratic artists in general also skillfully brings Paris in 1959 to life. Highly entertaining!

I'm a fan of Godard and Linklater, so I couldn't ignore this film, but unfortunately, Linklater's latest—intended as an homage to Nouvelle Vogue, but also to the excitement of making your first film—is a superfluous one. The story is well known: film critics for the film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma—who are film fanatics themselves—decide that the best critique is making a film yourself, with Godard as the last of the group given the chance, and in his conception of cinema as a revolutionary art, immediately throwing all conventions overboard, whereby everything preconceived and prepared must give way to the spontaneous, realistic, and free (so that Godard only tells the actors what to do and say on set, thus paradoxically wanting to exercise absolute control himself). In the editing, he doesn't cut scenes, but rather everything around the strongest moments, so that the final product feels deliberately jumpy and rushed. Godard's method was inexpensive and time-consuming, and Linklater's film is above all a reconstruction of the 20 days of filming, some of which were completely unfilmed, that it took to make Godard's debut film, À bout de souffle, after introducing some one hundred figures in and around the Nouvelle Vague movement in the run-up to it.
I don't know who's interested in this: perhaps the idea was to elevate Godard's postmodern technique of cramming his films with quotes and references to previous films, and playing with conventional film techniques—making them films about films—to an even higher meta-level by making a film about how Godard filmed his famous first film. But it completely misses the unconventional and urgent nature of Godard's genius experiments: it turns Godard's "revolution" into a dusty museum piece, and that can't be the intention. This is the worst film of the year; Godard could have called it "disgusting."

A real pleasure to watch. Filmed in the style of that place and period. It's a gimmick, of course, but it works, even if Linklater lacks a bit of his own flair. However, this is more than compensated for by the atmosphere, the captivating glimpse into the making of À Bout de Souffle, and above all, the sheer joy that the film and actors exude. That makes you want to see the film and, with pleasure, watch it to the end. 4.0*.
