The cartoonist Stu Miley is about to achieve success with his creation "Monkeybone", and is happy with his beautiful girlfriend Julie. However, on the evening that he wants to propose to her, disaster strikes: he has an accident and falls into a coma. His ghost is moved to Downtown, a place between life and death populated by figures from people's nightmares.
