Max (Alan King) is the prototype of the American self-made man. He is a successful TV producer, has a devoted wife, an adorable daughter and a seductive mistress, Bones (Ali MacGraw). The latter, however, has had enough of serving as an occasional partner. Max has never bothered to build a serious relationship with her. She wants to break up with him, but first she wants him to buy her the abandoned studios of 'International Pictures'. He does, until she announces that she is getting married to a young writer.
