Paolo Morelli is an honest, cheerful bank employee who wouldn't hurt a fly. One day, however, his whole life comes crashing down when he is falsely accused of stealing three million lire. He insists he is innocent, but no one believes him. When later the real thief is caught, Paolo is bitter and decides to commit a crime himself.
