Grimm plot

Jacob and his sister Marie are left in the woods one winter's day by their unemployed father. Jacob finds in his coat a note from his mother urging them to go to her brother in Spain. Once in Spain, their uncle turns out to have died. Marie meets Diego, a Spanish surgeon, and falls in love with him. Diego lives with his overbearing sister Teresa. To Jacob's astonishment, Marie wants to marry Diego. Even after the wedding, jealous Jacob tries to get his sister away from Diego. When that fails, he begins to defy his brother-in-law. It soon becomes apparent that this does not go unpunished for anyone ...

A film that floats between humor and surrealism with an entire atmosphere that leaves open to the viewer for interpretation what is meant by the whole. I read here various ideas such as references to fairy tales (not difficult with a title like Grimm), or the symbolism to Christianity as a fairy tale. A film that is difficult to grasp but nevertheless holds the viewer. Not a masterpiece, but a film with enough food for thought and discussion.

Really enjoyed Grimm re-edit. I have not seen the first version, but this one was certainly not a disappointment for me. I think it's a very creative and original film, I liked the humor, I like the absurd and alienating and I didn't see anything bad about the acting. I like Halina Reijn. Delicious this! A 9. 4.5*

Another fine one from Warmerdam, who this time dives into the world of fairy tales. Especially the Hansel and Gretel story in the beginning stands out. Later it became less clear to me, but you can always find something. For me, the film is divided into two main parts. I found the part in the Netherlands itself the strongest. For example, the forest that Jacob and Marie got lost in had a grim dark atmosphere. The witch was then replaced by an old peasant couple. Great interlude by Lammers and Malherbe by the way.

The second part with Spain is coming sooner than you think. Separate and conscious assembly to suddenly enter Spain with a moped. In Spain, there was a bit of a breakdown in the film, although some characters and some scenes still stand out. That Sofia, the black housekeeper for example, I found mysterious, just like the butler. Too bad they didn't come out well enough. The scene with the bucket was deliciously absurd.

Halina Reijn was quite a nice role for me, from a scared girl to eventually wife of a millionaire, always knowing where she wanted to go.
