During an evening at the club where Owen [Spike Fearn] works as a sound engineer, he dances and talks with a student [Sadie Soverall] from the University of Manchester, who even gives him her phone number. When he tries to call her, it turns out her number is incorrect. Undeterred, he tries to figure out which of the 318 Emilys at the university is the one he is looking for. One of those Emilys [Angourice Rice] sees Owen as the ideal case study for her research on the psychological effects of love and decides to follow him on his quest. Fearn is a breath of fresh air with his authentic acting and laid-back Scouser accent, and the chemistry with Rice is visible in every frame. The search is full of pleasant surprises (the scene where Owen and his brother [Jack Riddiford] sing an unexpected song together is a personal favorite), and there is good supporting work from, among others, Kat Ronney as the student council chair and Prasanna Puwanarajah as a cynical professor. Although there is no doubt about how it ends, the resolution is still disappointing and rushed.

You can see the ending coming in three ways. That Emily is found but turns out to have a different name. That a date does happen but that the date is just a bit disappointing(which is perfectly fine by the way, that is actually quite normal) where the helpful Emily ends up being the one he leaves with. And that that helpful Emily has started using herself as a study object. But fortunately, the film is often charming with a fine soundtrack and a pleasant atmosphere. Emily is played with great enjoyment by Rice; she really shines on screen. And the supporting roles are all nicely cast, sometimes charming and tender, then comedic, or a combination of both.
Anyway, the story itself is rather thin despite the addition of all sorts of comedic elements, yet the film still feels just a little too long. And I find the main character just a bit too artificially immature and naive; his fidgeting and hands-in-the-sleeves (Emily actually liked that) really pushed me to my limits. Rounded up to 3.0*.

A mediocre film in which a student helps a young man find a woman named Emily under false pretenses. A fairly standard premise that could have made for a fine rom-com. The characters are not particularly compellingly developed, and there isn't really any chemistry between the two main characters. It also becomes long-winded quite quickly. It does have a nice soundtrack, though.
