El Pisito plot
Rodolfo and Petrita want to marry. They each live in a separate neighborhood in the run-down part of Madrid, while looking for a small apartment (or "pisito", in Spanish dialect). Unfortunately, they both have low incomes and find none. On the advice of his colleagues, Rodolfo marries the more than eighty-year-old and frail Doña Martina, who owns a small apartment. If she dies, he would come into possession of that house through the inheritance. Rodolfo and Petrita are now feverishly awaiting her funeral.
