Drie Dagen Vis plot

Gerrie from Rotterdam has lived in the Algarve with his second wife Rosa for years, but is still officially registered in the Netherlands. Gerrie, who used to be a bus driver, is a COPD patient and travels to Rotterdam once a year for his check-ups and other routine visits. He stays with his Cape Verdean stepdaughter and reunites with his son Dick, who is at odds with himself and the rest of the world. Gerrie has not paid attention to his son's problems for years. Dick always expects too much from the short reunion with his father and wants quality time. This year there is a chance that it will be Gerrie's last visit to the Netherlands.

Since his retirement, widow Gerrie [Ton Kas] has been living in Portugal, where he lives with Rosa. Since then, he returns to Rotterdam once a year for three days to visit his daughter Nadia [Neide dos Santos Silva] and his son Dick [Guido Pollemans] and to visit the trusted family doctor and dentist. Nadia has a husband [Adison dos Reis], two young children and a busy life, but Dick just muddles along and is mainly concerned with the family history. The men in this family are not talkers, but Gerrie has made a decision that he knows he has to discuss with his son. Will he manage to cross that threshold? Kas and Pollemans are a sublime tragicomic duo in this character portrait of two introverts, especially during the awkward silences that fall when they do try to have some kind of conversation. A very successful comedy and a beautiful ode to Rotterdam with a visual style (that sublime, ironic opening shot) that is reminiscent of “our” Bert Haanstra.

The film is shot in black and white, which gives the story the right alienating effect. First of all, it is noticeable how the communication is constantly not quite right – as is well known, men are not good talkers either, and the film exploits this brilliantly – which has an effect that is as subtle as it is witty (e.g. “She thought it was a bit strange.” “Yes, do you think that’s strange?”). The emigrated Gerrie and his son Dick, who is collecting things, walk around somewhat lost in this mist of miscommunication and mutual misunderstanding and therefore somewhat awkward situations, in which the connection with the world is also not smooth (e.g. when Dick lies that the bus was too early: “Did you miss the bus?” “No, the bus missed me”). The dry, somewhat absurdist humor resulting from the alienation and miscommunication makes you chuckle the whole time; the joke that is told against its will even made the audience burst out laughing.

But the pain behind it becomes increasingly clear: precisely because Dick realizes that he is losing everything – his parents and ultimately his life – he has such a collecting mania in an absurd attempt to preserve. The black and white not only shows that the men are in a 'strange' world that no longer offers them a home, but also has a strong nostalgic dimension: Dick in particular is homesick for the past when the ties with, among others, the family were probably still close and which past he tries to hold on to with all his might. The black and white finally also gives the right gloomy atmosphere to the gloomy story. The film is thus a comic-bitter film that is not only really funny but also has more depth than you are used to in a Dutch film.

Actually a very good, sincere film with little to criticize. Beautifully shot, strongly acted and exceptionally good dialogues. Everything was very colloquial, extremely natural and often very witty.

If I were a professional reviewer I would have given the film more stars, but I am only a MM user and I let my own taste weigh more than my objective opinion. And I just don't like the silent film genre. At the beginning Three Days of Fish is quite lively and funny in a between-the-lines way, but as the tension between the two main characters increases, the silence increases, and that was exactly what I didn't feel like.

Definitely a recommendation. The Netherlands is actually a great film country.
