It seems like a normal day in the life of the Wilkins family, but then the soldier Bill Seacroft appears. He comes for Ruth, but she knows nothing. It turns out that Miriam has used her sister's name and photo when writing letters to Private Seacroft who is active at the front. Seacroft is on two days leave and Ruth sulkingly agrees to spend these days with him, even though she has just become engaged to the somewhat dull Albert.
