Very funny mystery with a spectacular finale. Adolphe Engers is incredibly funny as a bumbling magician.

'Ladies and gentlemen, you will now experience the chilling history of the ghost train!' For those who can enjoy the affected Old Dutch of, for example, the polygon newsreel. 'The Ghost Train' (1939) looks particularly fresh because of the expressionistic shadow play and the atmospheric setting of a dimly lit station at night. On the soundtrack there are just the right ticking, clattering, popping and banging sounds that create the right dose of suspense. It's not really nail-bitingly scary, but it certainly has its moments. When the mysterious train enters the Valkensrade station, it unexpectedly turns out to have a spectacular climax in store.

Yet it is mainly the fat characters who steal the show: the magician and his assistant; the Freudian psychoanalyst and his hysterical patient; the mousy official and his docile bride; the clownish bachelor full of mischievous pranks; the meddlesome Christian teetotaler. All as flat as a dime, but the stereotypical characters fit perfectly into this farcical horror comedy. Nicely coordinated. A few mean jokes back and forth. An hour of cinema could be better spent than with a work in which an international celebrity such as Carl Lamac contributed to our country's film history.

Quite nice to have seen. It does feel very outdated, with a Polygoon newsreel-like Dutch and a rather stage-like appearance full of characters who always express themselves civilly. But still, an entertaining watch, with plenty of entertainment with the array of characters in the first half - and also a trend break at the end when the ghost story changes into a crime thriller when the ghosting turns out to be a cover for a train robbery, including a shootout and a train accident. It remains stiff and wooden, but I did enjoy myself.
