Cousin Bette, a poor and lonely woman has lost her prominent sister and now tries to seek company from other people. But Baron Hulot and her niece Hortense don't like her, which leads her to a young sculptor who she saves from his destruction. But the artist falls in love with Hortense of all people, causing Bette to seek revenge. Together with Jenny, she slowly destroys the lives of her relatives.
