The mysterious and fairytale-like Bird-Man from the title is Bertold, a teacher in traditional dance and a follower of Theys Eluay, the champion of an independent West Papua who was murdered in 2000, who tried to find a solution in a nonviolent way. When Eluay is arrested, Bertold also has to go into hiding. His fifteen-year-old son Arnold becomes captivated by a mysterious, confused Javanese woman he meets at the harbour.
