Not a bad film, but certainly not a high-flyer. Possibly one of the better of Murphy's last years.

Don't expect a bland comedy like Norbit or the like. You could describe the film more as a family film/tragi-comedy in which a clear message has been acquired. Where the film still starts as a comedy with a wonderfully selfish and egocentric Murphy, the film systematically changes to a kind of drama.

This is both the film's strong and weak point. On the one hand, it's nice that this is more than a 'dumb comedy' like Murphy, Sandler, Vaughn, Ferrell and others have been doing in recent years. On the other hand, after the comical first half, you have no idea that there will be hardly any laughter in the last part. I'm lucky that I could taste that last part in itself and that Murphy handled it quite well too.

Yet the film was just a bit too erratic in its jokes and the credibility is not there to bring the last act in a more dramatic tone.

A Thousand Words is certainly not a bad film, but certainly not the film that will put Eddie Murphy back on the map. Nice but not overwhelming.

A better movie with Eddie Murphy.

The falling leaves in this film can be linked to Murphy's talent. His success was particularly evident in the 1980s. This includes Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and Coming to America (1988). Over the years, his films became mediocre. The theme largely focused on fat people. Examples include The Nutty Professor (1996) and Norbit ( 2007). This movie, directed by Brian Robbins, is unfortunately not a big improvement yet. Still, it's definitely worth a look.

The film was shot in 2008, but didn't hit theaters until 2012. The turnout in America was dramatic, and it was decided to release the film directly on DVD for the most part in Europe. In addition to Murphy's smooth chat, he is able to provide his character with deeper emotions. This is an important plus.

Despite this plus, the critics were not convinced. The film was nominated for 3 Razzies. Murphy was nominated as the worst actor.

2.5 *

no good.

Once in a while Murphy misses the mark. It's that the midcentury modern house was so beautiful, there was still something to enjoy, but the rest was not good.

One big cliché dragon with wrong music and a long and far-fetched story to get to the core. The guru didn't radiate anything and the sidekick help wasn't funny. Playing time was still too long despite the 90 minutes.
