In 1745, the German princess Catherine is about to marry Grand Duke Peter of Russia. At first she thinks he's a nice man. But his suspicious and unstable nature separates the two from each other. Peter finds comfort in the attractive ladies in waiting, while Catherine fantasizes about her own fictional lovers. That goes well for a while, until accession to the throne brings out the worst in Peter. Loyal Catherine is urged to take power.
