Cranko plot
In 1960, choreographer John Cranko (Sam Riley) comes to the Stuttgart Ballet to breathe new life into the company. His journey from London was not entirely voluntary, however. Because there, in Great Britain, life became increasingly unbearable for him. As a homosexual man, he was considered a leper by society and even banned from his profession. But in Stuttgart, none of this seemed to matter much. Cranko quickly won the favor of the public, climbed the career ladder to become a ballet director and became a star of the scene with worldwide fame. But like almost all fame, this also comes with a price tag. His steep rise takes its toll and Cranko has to face his inner demons.
