Now that #beingwhoyouareare has been declared a Christmas theme by the Belgian national broadcaster, 'Colette' could not be more relevant. Advocate for women's rights, gender freedom, breaking sexual conventions and at the same time (albeit only a little?) avant-garde within the artistic community: one wonders why Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is not a buzzing name today that art historians can't get enough of .

Because…Colette was a woman, at a time when women by definition had to operate in the shadows of men? So her fight on many fronts remained a guerrilla, a skirmish in the rear, a slowly fought battle that continues to this day... but for which she certainly laid the foundation!

Keira Knightley portrays the title character as she must have been: unruly and challenging, but also vulnerable and highly intelligent. Knightley accidentally adds her irresistible looks. Et voilà, there you have it the recipe for a beautiful historical film. Although Wash Westmoreland (who?) neatly colors within the lines of the traditional genre film, the cinematography is refined, the music intriguing (hearing Thomas Adès flirting with Ravel, Satie and by extension the fin de siècle as a melting pot of romanticism and impressionism... delicious!) and the pace is almost perfect. Squeaky clean craftsmanship, but enlivened by actors, direction and composition.

In short, watch!

3.5*

Solid biographical film about a writer whose name I knew, but who I didn't really know much about. One of the themes, a woman who produces work under her husband's name (not a spoiler, because it is already in the description on this site) is something that also appears in the film Big Eyes.

In any case, the character of Colette is interesting, and well portrayed by Knightley, who I'm generally not a big fan of. Also excellent acting from co-star West, who manages to portray a role with quite a bit of charisma. It's just a shame that this film is not in French, just like Girl with a Pearl Earring should have been in Dutch and Amadeus in German. Unfortunately unavoidable, because stars like Knightley probably don't speak across the border enough, which means you end up with lesser-known actors and for a film studio, well-known stars are probably a fog commercially speaking. Audiovisually otherwise reasonable, which gives me a 2.5*.

I looked at this biography and it wasn't bad. I had never heard of this woman before, but it was interesting to see. Cast it fine and the movie looked good. The playing time was long, but it was not boring.
