From the Earth to the Moon plot

Shortly after the American Civil War, businessman and inventor General Barbicane wants to send a rocket and crew to the moon. However, his rival Captain Nicholl finds this idea an insult to God and disables the rocket. He wants to ensure that they cannot return to Earth with it.
