Of the two hitherto inseparable young friends, one ("Gator-Bait" Blair) still lives in their beloved Okefenokee swamp, while the other (Jeff Owens) aspires to become an engineer. Owens returns home after completing his engineering studies and tries to convince his friend Blair and the other residents of the swamp community that a modernization of the community is a good thing. His best friend Blair, however, offers the strongest resistance. Then Patricia 'Pat' Wayburn comes into their lives.
