saw it yesterday. Thought the animal fights were pretty nicely portrayed for the time back then. Scary elements à la horror are missing a bit, but for me it is more of a cult film than pure horror. Anyway, still well entertained, although it is of course not a high flyer in terms of acting talent, etc.

3*

"Are we not men?"

Good movie. Reminded me a bit of The Planet of The Apes also a bit of King Kong (1974) but this one is graphically (and in terms of story) much better.

They followed HG Wells's story more closely. At least in terms of time period. The book was written in 1896 and that is about right here. The other film takes place in 2010, which I don't think is correct at all.

The animal fights in the movie are very good and seem very real. How they throw a tame tiger on a stuntman and the next shot put a dead fake tiger down is well done. The human-animals remind me a lot of the apes in The Planet of The Apes and these are also very well made.

Burt Lancaster does an excellent job as Dr. Moreau. He is also the only actor in all of the screen adaptations who fits the description in Wells's book. Michael York is a good main character. Barbara Carrera, who plays several cult films, also does a very good job as Maria. Nigel Davenport, who plays a similar role very often, also did a good job. Richard Basehart was also very good as the captain of the man-animals, his voice is a bit like John Huston's.

Very nice Sci-Fi/Thriller story about the psychotic doctor. There is also a moral behind it, but it is not too obvious. I do think that you can notice in some dialogues that at that time there were not the same animal rights as now. However, I am assured that no animals were injured or killed before the making of the film.

The music by Laurence Rosenthal, who also composed the music of Clash of the Titans and The Young Indiana Jones, is very good and gives a very mysterious effect.
