South of Suva plot
Phyllis Latimer sails to Suva in the Fiji Islands to rejoin her husband Sydney, whom she has not seen since their marriage three years earlier. She travels with Pauline Leonard, who is to meet John Webster in Suva, but Pauline chooses instead to accompany a man she has fallen in love with on board. When Phyllis arrives at her husband's plantation, she finds that Sydney has become a savage drunkard and has surrounded himself with native women. Phyllis gives him two weeks to pull himself together, and when he does not and she tries to leave, he attacks her.
