Beautifully constructed epic that could have lasted a bit longer, everything is in it, a beautiful love story, large-scale scenes with many extras, lots of drama and this time no happy ending because of course everyone knows the story.

Brat pit didn't do badly in the remake but I still prefer this older version .

BB #13

An epic film with a civilized-epic running time of two hours (well, if you count the 'overture'). How much of that is BB on screen? Maybe a minute.

Aside from that, it really isn't my kind of movie. Too many fabrications and free interpretations in the script, which is otherwise told in an unprecedentedly boring and uninteresting manner. Not a single actor stands out with a remarkable performance or plays a decent character. The only thing that works occasionally are the hilarious antics of some nameless extras in a corner of the screen—for example, during the looting and pillaging of the neighboring villages, where a theatrically flailing lady is carried away overhead.

But what is really wrong is the music. Seriously, what a disaster that is. Nails on a chalkboard. Even then, those 110 minutes of effective playing time are still epically long.

A grandly conceived but rather uneven historical spectacle, with a particularly dull first hour. After that, there is plenty to enjoy, although the film is nowhere truly impressive or compelling. The characters lack charisma and the events are too tame for that. It was nice, by the way, to see a very young Brigitte Bardot in an entertaining cameo role.
